The Comfortable and Invisible Alternative to Metal Braces

Let’s face it, not everyone is born with a naturally straight smile. Whether you missed the opportunity to get braces as a child or you’ve experienced orthodontic regression since your time with braces, your crowded, gapped, or crooked teeth are a leading source of embarrassment. Not to mention, they are also negatively impacting your oral health. You know traditional metal braces can correct the issues; however, you need a more sophisticated solution. At Crossroads Family Dentistry, we can improve the health and appearance of your smile without bulky metal brackets and wires with the help of Invisalign in Forest! Schedule a consultation by contacting us today and see if this comfortable and Invisalign alternative to metal braces is right for you.

Why Choose Crossroads Family Dentistry for Invisalign?

What Is Invisalign?

Traditional braces use brackets and wires to pull your teeth into position. Invisalign works differently because it relies on a series of clear aligners. Each one in the series applies continual pressure to gradually move your teeth into a better position. It’s recommended you wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day and switch to the next one in the series every week. Although everyone’s treatment plan differs, most patients are finished with their series in about 12 months; however, if your alignment issues are complex, you can expect the process to take a little longer.

During your journey to a complete smile, you’ll enjoy a more convenient treatment plan than what’s expected with metal braces. Since the aligners are removable, you won’t need to worry about any dietary restrictions. This also makes your oral hygiene routine a breeze because there aren’t any brackets or wires to clean around.

How Invisalign Works

If you’re interested in getting Invisalign, the first step of the process is to have an initial consultation. During this visit, one of our experienced dentists here at Crossroads Family Dentistry will evaluate your oral health and ask you some questions about what you’d like to improve about your teeth. This appointment is also a great time to ask any questions you may have about Invisalign and how it can help you.

If we determine that Invisalign is the best choice for you, we’ll then develop your custom treatment timeline, take images of your mouth, and impressions of your teeth. We will send all of the images and information we’ve collected to a special Invisalign lab where they will craft each set of your aligners to our specifications.

In a few weeks, we’ll call you back in to pick up your first set of aligners once they’ve arrived. You’ll wear each pair for two weeks generally and will slowly begin noticing your teeth getting straighter. Every several weeks, you’ll visit our dental office in Forest for a quick evaluation to ensure your treatment is on track and to receive the next set of trays in your treatment.

Once your treatment is almost complete several months later, we will likely fit you for a retainer. This important appliance keeps your teeth from drifting back into their original positions and becoming crooked again. We’ll let you know how long you’ll need to wear it, and any additional aftercare recommendations we may have.

Who Invisalign Can Help

It’s easy to feel insecure about your imperfect teeth, causing you to hide your smile when speaking or taking a picture. Unfortunately, your self-esteem isn’t the only thing that suffers from your dental alignment issues.

Overlapped, gapped, or tilted teeth are more difficult to keep clean. This allows harmful plaque and bacteria to accumulate in hard-to-reach places, increasing your risk of preventable oral health problems, like tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Not to mention, you also have a heightened risk of a dental emergency if there’s trauma or injury to your face or mouth.

Fortunately, Invisalign in Forest is an incredibly versatile treatment that can solve a variety of orthodontic problems. During your consultation, our team will assess the severity of your case and develop a treatment plan to help improve your oral health as well as the alignment of your pearly whites. Below are some of the most common issues we treat with Invisalign.

Crowded Teeth

Having teeth that are bunched up can create hard-to-reach areas of your mouth that are perfect for bacteria, plaque, and food debris to hide out in. This can dramatically increase your risk of developing common oral health problems such as decay and gum disease. Invisalign will gradually adjust your teeth so they’re neatly side-by-side, making them easier to clean.

Gaps Between Teeth

While some people don’t mind having gaps between their teeth, others suffer from declining self-confidence because of this orthodontic issue. Invisalign aligners can close these uneven spaces and prevent the collection of plaque and bacteria between teeth.

Bite Misalignment

Invisalign can address overbite, underbite, and cross bite issues that can cause other conditions such as TMJ disorder. By aligning your bite, you’ll be able to reduce your risk of excessive enamel erosion caused by teeth grinding and jaw clenching.

Living with Invisalign Aligners

At this point, you’ve probably heard a lot of great things about Invisalign, including that the aligners are clear and comfortable. But are there any changes you need to make to your daily routine, like cutting out certain foods from your diet? It’s a great question! Fortunately, clear aligner treatment is pretty hassle-free. In this next section, we’ll cover what you need to know about life with Invisalign, starting with how often you need to wear the aligners.

Wearing Your Trays

While each treatment plan is unique, there are some guidelines all patients need to follow, like keeping the aligners on for 20-22 hours a day. This is crucial because, if you consistently miss the mark, then your chances of falling off-track with your treatment plan will increase significantly.

The easiest way to meet the mark day after day is by adopting good habits, like only taking your aligners off when it’s absolutely necessary and putting them in their designated case when you aren’t wearing them so they don’t get lost or damaged.

Cleaning Your Aligners

Good news: keeping your aligners clean doesn’t require special oral hygiene products. In fact, there’s a good chance you already have everything you need: a soft-bristled toothbrush, clean water, and clear, mild dishwashing liquid.

Tip: Always check the temperature of the water first! If it’s too hot, it can warp the plastic, negatively impacting how they fit in the process.

Eating & Drinking

Another perk of Invisalign: you don’t need to completely alter your diet. In fact, you can continue to eat all of your favorites throughout your orthodontic treatment! All we ask is that you keep crunchy, sticky, and sugary foods to a minimum in an effort to prevent both dental and orthodontic emergencies. Instead, do your best to eat healthy, well-balanced meals that are packed with nutrient-dense foods, like seasonal vegetables.

Losing or Damaging a Tray

Initially, losing or damaging a tray may not seem like an issue. However, both situations have the potential to significantly delay your treatment plan, so it’s important that you act fast. More specifically, we recommend calling our Forest dental team right away so we can take a look at where you are in the teeth-straightening process and determine if it’s safe to move onto the next set in the series a bit early.

Attending Routine Check-Ins

Another crucial component of life with Invisalign is attending routine check-in visits. These appointments typically occur every 6-8 weeks, and they are crucial because they allow us to monitor the movement of your teeth. If everything looks good, we can provide you with the next set in the series. If something isn’t right, we can determine why that is before making the necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign is so popular because it offers a laundry list of benefits that traditional braces don’t. The most obvious advantage is that your aligners will be practically unnoticeable. You won’t have to deal with the cumbersome look and feel of brackets and wires. Some additional benefits that are common reasons patients choose Invisalign include:

Understanding the Cost of Invisalign

You likely want to know Invisalign’s cost before committing to it. After all, how else can you ensure that treatment is cost-effective? The truth is that the cost of Invisalign treatment varies from patient to patient. You’ll need a consultation to get an accurate estimate of how much your specific treatment will cost. Fortunately, we at Crossroads Family Dentistry can see you in person to discuss your Invisalign needs, estimate the cost, and explore payment options. Factors that Affect the Cost of Invisalign

There are several factors that impact the cost of Invisalign in Forest. In general, they include the following:

  • The Number of Aligners Needed: If you don’t stick to your treatment plan, you may need more aligners than originally planned, which will cost more.
  • The Tooth Movements Involved: The more severe your orthodontic issues, the more Invisalign will cost.
  • Whether You Need Extra Accessories: Aside from the aligners themselves, some patients need accessories like elastics as well. Naturally, these extra tools add to the treatment price.

Invisalign Vs. Mail-In Aligners: Which Is Pricier?

A close-up of aligners on bathroom counter

Smile Direct Club™ was a company that specialized in “mail-in aligners” that boasted all the results of Invisalign without actually needing to see a dentist, either in person or through a video call. These “quick-fix” treatments cost only about $2,000 or so, which is far less costly than the average $3,000- $8,000 for an Invisalign treatment!

However, if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is. Since Smile Direct Club™ had little-to-no professional oversight, many patients complained of no results, or in some cases, worse orthodontic issues than what they started with. Smile Direct Club™ has since filed for bankruptcy and is no longer operating.

However, there are still “DIY mail-in aligners” out there that operate the same way. No direct professional oversight leaves room for errors like bad dental impressions and poor compliance. Should such things happen, your smile could suffer serious issues that need dental care anyway.

On the other hand, Invisalign has treatment guided by our dental team every step of the way. Thanks to this feedback, you can trust you’ll get great aligners based on highly accurate impressions. The straightening process would therefore be smoother and more successful.

Does Dental Insurance Cover the Cost of Invisalign?

While many dental insurance plans generally cover at least a portion of orthodontic treatment depending on the policy, Invisalign isn’t always part of this coverage.

Still, there are exceptions. You should check with your insurance provider and the details of your specific plan to see if they might cover Invisalign. You can also use your FSA account (if you have one) to help meet the cost.

During your consultation with us at Crossroads Family Dentistry, we’ll ensure your benefits work to your greatest advantage.

Options for Making Invisalign Affordable

Of course, there are ways to make Invisalign affordable besides dental insurance coverage!

For instance, consider our office’s in-house membership plan. By paying a small monthly fee, you’ll get discounts on a number of treatments our office offers. As for how much it’d save you on Invisalign, feel free to ask us at your next visit.

On the other hand, you might prefer flexible financing. In that case, our team accepts CareCredit, which provides low- to no-cost interest payment plans for treatment. This service would split up the cost of your Invisalign care into budget-friendly installments.

As you can see, Crossroads Family Dentistry is ready to give you a straighter smile at a cost you can afford. So book a consultation with us to learn more financial details!

Invisalign FAQs

What Kind of Orthodontic Problems Can Invisalign Correct?

While certain severe cases may require traditional metal braces to correct, Invisalign can be used for a wide variety of orthodontic issues. Typically, Invisalign is used to help straighten crooked teeth. It can also correct bite problems, whether it’s an overbite (upper teeth too far forward), underbite (upper teeth too far back), crossbite (some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth) or open bite (upper and lower teeth don’t meet). Oftentimes Invisalign can also fix some spacing problems if your teeth are too close together or too far apart.

Can I Get Invisalign If I’ve Already Had Braces or Other Dental Work?

If you got braces when you were young, your teeth might have eventually shifted over the years and become misaligned again. Luckily, Invisalign can still work even if you’ve had orthodontic work in the past; in fact, some patients might be able to switch from braces to Invisalign in the middle of treatment depending on their situation.

If there are porcelain veneers, crowns, or bridges in your mouth, you might still be able to get Invisalign as well. It all depends on whether your restoration will still allow the trays to adjust your teeth on an individual basis. We’ll examine the state of your mouth thoroughly before deciding whether Invisalign is right for you.

How Long Will I Need to Wear Invisalign?

The Invisalign aligners need to be worn for about 20 to 22 hours a day, and each tray is used for about two weeks before moving on to the next one. The length of Invisalign treatment will depend largely on the complexity of your case and whether you wear the aligners as often as you should. On average, Invisalign usually takes about 12 to 18 months to omplete. Compared to traditional metal braces that might need to be worn for two or even three years, you can see how Invisalign is often the faster option.

How Do I Take Care of Invisalign?

You can clean your aligners using the Invisalign Cleaning System or a denture cleanser; otherwise, you can brush them with a toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste. (Be sure to rinse them in lukewarm water; if they get too hot, the plastic could be warped.) Make sure your aligners are sterilized before you put them in your mouth.

Be careful around blueberries, tomato sauce, coffee, and other dark-colored foods and beverages. If any residue remains after your meal, it could permanently stain your Invisalign trays. For this reason, you should brush your teeth thoroughly whenever you’re done eating; you might consider carrying a travel toothbrush to use after lunch or whenever you’re away from home.
